The 2010 U.S. Census Tracts geographic dataset was developed by the Syracuse-Onondaga County Planning Agency (SOCPA) for the analysis and display of demographic data in Onondaga County. The shapefile's polygons represent individual census tracts, which were derived from linear features extracted out of SOCPA's Street File dataset. Digital files obtained from the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau were used to guide the on-screen selection and extraction of linear features from the street file. Sixteen commonly used demographic variables (obtained from the 2010 U.S. Census Demographic Profile Dataset and the 2007-2011 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimate) are included as attributes for each tract.
Suitable for use in a GIS database to display, query, and analyze demographic data in Onondaga County for general planning purposes.

Shapefile consists of polygon features representing each census tract in Onondaga County. Although the dataset is considered positionally "reliable" for general planning purposes, it has not been reviewed by the U.S. Census Bureau or any other official agency.
This shapefile was created as an extract of boundary features selected from the Onondaga County Street File. As a result, the positional accuracy of the census tract boundaries should be similar to that of the street file (about +/- 40 feet).
No quantitative tests
The Onondaga County 2010 Census Tracts shapefile was created using shapefiles obtained directly from the U.S. Census Bureau as a guide to manually select linear features from the Onondaga County Street file for export to a new dataset. In most cases, the boundaries between census tracts on the hard-copy maps matched directly with features from the street file. In the few instances where a boundary was ambiguous, or the same feature was represented by multiple lines in the street file, the nearest street file feature to the boundary was selected. If no street file features were adjacent to the hard-copy boundary, a new line was digitized on-screen and added to the County Census Tracts dataset. After completion of the boundary export and digitization, the lines were converted to polygons. Sixteen commonly used demograhpic variables have been added to this shapefile as attributes. These attributes are a tabular extract from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2010 Census Summary File 1, 2010 Demographic Profile Data, and 2007-2011 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates.
