The Distance Measurement button
This tool calculates the linear distance of a drawn feature on the map. Click this tool to activate it. A window displays prompting the user to click on the map to start the measure.

Begin drawing the linear feature to measure, as directed. Keep clicking to define the line and then double-click to end it. The cumulative length of the line displays on the map and in the Measurement window.
Click New Measurement to reset the drawn line and begin a new measurement.
Use the Unit drop down list to set the measurement units (e.g., feet, meters).
